STUDENT AWARDS

Every year, the Carolina-Piedmont Section of the American Chemical Society sponsors three awards for undergraduate students enrolled in colleges or universities within the Section’s geographical area. Any section member may submit nominations.
 
 TO CLARIFY: THIS YEAR, PERSONAL STATEMENTS ARE REQUIRED FROM STUDENT NOMINEES FOR ALL THREE AWARDS. 
 

EXCELLENCE IN SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The candidate must be a junior or senior chemistry major. The nomination must contain a copy of the unofficial undergraduate transcript and at least two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a chemistry professor and the other from someone outside the student’s respective chemistry department 

OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD

The candidate must be a junior or senior who has completed 16 credit hours of chemistry, holds a C+ grade average or equivalent, and possesses the innate ability to inspire and lead others. The nomination must contain a copy of the unofficial undergraduate transcript and at least two letters of recommendation. The letters should specify any leadership positions held at school or within the community, community service projects, awards or honors, and any special considerations.

EXCELLENCE IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD

The candidate must be a senior and the research must be an original project conducted within the geographical boundaries of the Section. A research abstract of less than 250 words must accompany the nomination. In addition, a letter of recommendation from the student's research advisor, indicating the percentage/extent of work contributed by the nominee, must accompany the nomination.

 

At the ACS C-P Section Student Awards meeting in April, the Scholastic Achievement awardee will be asked to speak about his or her university experience and any postgraduate plans. The Leadership and Undergraduate Research awardees will give presentations about their respective leadership and research experiences. Each awardee will receive a $250 award in addition to a certificate bearing their name.


The Awards Committee will present the awards to the respective winners during the Local Section Meeting in April. A student may be nominated for more than one award; however, the student cannot receive more than one award in the same year.
